Vasim's 35 minutes of hell

Jul 20, 2016

Vasim Shaikh, from Mumbai, told us this story. This is serious business, people.  Here goes “I was riding to Ladakh, when at the Pang valley, I encountered a river crossing formed by the melting of glaciers. Now locals had told me to judge the depth of a river/stream crossing by waiting for a truck to ford it first. I waited, and soon, an Army truck passed, cleared the crossing with no difficulty, and went on its own way. Motivated, I started to cross. Bang in the middle of the crossing, the front wheel of my bike, MacTEP (Cyrillic for Master), got stuck.

The water level was rising, and now reached my knee. Temperatures were dropping. I tried to rock my machine back and forth, but it would not budge. The air was so thin that the engine stalled. I was having trouble breathing and I could feel my fingers and toes going numb. With no help in sight, hypothermia was setting in. It was the end for me. My bike was giving up, my body was at it’s limit and I was at my wits’ end.Out of nowhere, a tourist vehicle arrived. I flashed my lights and miraculously, they noticed me. They came to my help. Pushing me out of the rut, they helped me cross the river. I wanted to thank them, but by the time I took off my helmet and gloves, they had vanished. They were ahead of me when I started riding again, and after a while, vanished into the mountains. I asked a few locals whether they had noticed that particular vehicle. But no one could recollect any vehicle of that sort passing by in the last 24 hours.

Who were they? Where did they come from? Where did they go? No one knows. But they saved my life.”Thrilled? Share it now! Have interesting stories to share? Shout out to us and we will feature yours as well.
