The roads to Airoli are perennially in bad shape, thanks to the heavy vehicle traffic on that route. Watch out for huge ridges and craters on the road, as they can throw you off balance. Slow down and ride in a single-lane formation, as you power on towards Panvel.
Legendary for its many tiny snack stalls and tea shops, Panvel is a favourite biker destination. This is where you should halt for a round of briefing and introductions. There is a large spare-parts shop here, where you can pick up some chain lubricant and detergent, because your bikes are going to get dirtier than ever. Also, do give all your bikes a thorough once-over, since there are very few mechanics along the NH48.
You will be riding along the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway, one of the finest in the state, on the way to Khalapur, There are a lot of resurfaced concrete patches, so brake judiciously. Watch out for the road sign leading to Khopoli, as that is where you should be headed.
With the sun rising in the horizon, birds chirping in the sky, and a butter-smooth road to give you company, the ride to Khopoli is a welcome respite from the frenzied traffic of the previous stretch. The muddy patches begin from here, so maintain a proper formation and keep safe distance.
All right, bikers! Slush beckons! Once you enter the AH47, the roads vanish. Keep a steady hand on the throttle, maintain the revs, and plow through, because you are in for the mud fest of your life!
