After crossing Velachery, take a small detour to Pallikaranai. The traffic here is minimal here and the roads are good in a good condition. You can also make a short visit to the Pallikaranai Bird Sanctuary that comes along the way, home to a wide variety of bird species. Mornings are the best time to visit the sanctuary.
Mahabalipuram or “Mahabs”, as it is locally known, is famous for its rock temples, fresh seafood and more. There will be a few police checkpoints here, so keep your documents ready. Stay away from the edges of the roads as there are some strong crosswinds over here.
Tindivanam, or the “land of tamarind” is where you arrive next. This is a major waypoint for SETC inter-state buses heading in and out of Chennai. Ride with caution, as the bus drivers here are known to be rash.

Bommapalayam, up next on the ECR, is known for one thing. Nope, not it’s mad house boat parties, but Auroville. Auroville is one of the world’s most famous devotional retreats. The sunrises here are pure magic. Best time to visit? Early mornings.
Does the ride end here? Nope. Absolutely not. Here is what we suggest. Find a place to freshen up, and dump your gear. Second, have a lovely dinner at one of the lovely French Bistros and then go for one of the many theme parties organised every weekend. Next, you can take in the early morning sunrise at the Pondicherry University beach. Sounds like a plan?
